Goal: Make genuinely critical reminders—especially medication—hard to miss on a mobile device, while keeping Google Calendar as the scheduling/source-of-truth system.

AppAndroidiPhone/iOSRole
BuzzKill✅❌*General notification → alarm layer
Event Alarm Sync✅❌Google Calendar → alarm layer
Medisafe✅✅Medication management / caregiver support
Galarm✅✅Standalone alarms/reminders
Unmissable: Calendar Alarm—✅iPhone calendar → real system alarms

Key conclusion: The strongest Android solution and strongest iPhone solution are currently different apps. This is largely because Android exposes much more flexible notification/alarm mechanisms to third-party apps.

BuzzKill

Use Google Calendar normally, then have BuzzKill convert selected Calendar notifications into persistent, attention-demanding alerts.

Architecture:

Google Calendar → notification → BuzzKill → critical alarm

Strengths:

  • Works with notifications from Calendar, Tasks, messaging, and other apps.
  • Rules can target the originating app and notification content.
  • Persistent/custom alerts and extensive notification controls.
  • Very inexpensive one-time purchase (currently about US$3.99).
  • Privacy-focused: notification content is processed locally; the developer says it does not send it to a server.

Important: BuzzKill is an Android-specific solution, not a cross-platform app.

Android: Event Alarm Sync — best dedicated Calendar alternative

Section titled “Android: Event Alarm Sync — best dedicated Calendar alternative”

Event Alarm Sync

This takes a more direct approach:

Google/Android Calendar → Event Alarm Sync → Android alarm

Current Google Play documentation describes full-screen alarms, sound, vibration, voice announcements, snooze/dismiss actions, selected-calendar monitoring, and alarm scheduling.

Why test it: It is conceptually stronger for critical Calendar events because it works from the calendar event itself rather than waiting for a Calendar notification.

Caution: It is new. Treat reliability as something to prove on the actual phone rather than assume from the feature list.

iPhone: Unmissable: Calendar Alarm — most directly aligned

Section titled “iPhone: Unmissable: Calendar Alarm — most directly aligned”

Unmissable: Calendar Alarm on the App Store

This is a notable iPhone-specific discovery. It explicitly converts calendar events into real system alarms, rather than ordinary notifications.

The current App Store listing says:

  • one active alarm is free;
  • lifetime unlimited access is available via one purchase;
  • no subscription;
  • no account/tracking/ads;
  • alarms are designed to stand out when ordinary notifications are easy to miss;
  • alarm history and weekly statistics are included in the paid version.

This makes it the iPhone counterpart worth testing rather than trying to force the Android BuzzKill architecture onto iOS.

Medisafe is available on both Android and iPhone.

Its role is different: it is a medication-management system with medication reminders, tracking, and Medfriends/family support. This makes it particularly relevant when an adult child is helping manage critical medications for an elderly parent affected by dementia/cognitive impairment.

For that situation, Medisafe may be preferable to a generic alarm app because the problem is not merely “make a sound”; it is medication management plus caregiver involvement.

Do not, however, assume any app makes medication administration safe by itself. For critical medication, test the complete alert → acknowledgement → caregiver/escalation workflow.

If the same system must support both Android and iPhone, Galarm is worth keeping on the shortlist. It is available on both platforms and is purpose-built for alarms/reminders. However, its architecture is more “use Galarm as the alarm system” than “keep Google Calendar as the source of truth and add an alarm layer.”

Galarm

”Unmissable” means testing, not just loud sound

Section titled “”Unmissable” means testing, not just loud sound”

For critical reminders, test the actual app/device combination with:

  • Phone locked and screen off
  • Do Not Disturb / Focus enabled
  • Silent/vibrate mode
  • Battery optimization
  • Overnight idle
  • Phone rebooted
  • Calendar event created or changed shortly before the event
  • Recurring events
  • Alarm ignored for 5–20 minutes
  • Bluetooth/watch connected and disconnected

Do not entrust critical medication reminders until the chosen system passes these tests on the actual phone.

  1. BuzzKill — best general-purpose critical-alert layer.
  2. Event Alarm Sync — best dedicated Google Calendar → alarm candidate.
  3. Galarm — mature cross-platform standalone alarm option.
  1. Unmissable: Calendar Alarm — most directly aligned with Google Calendar → real alarm.
  2. Galarm — mature cross-platform standalone alarm option.
  3. Medisafe — consider when medication management and caregiver support are the primary need.

Medisafe deserves separate consideration, because caregiver/family support can matter more than simply making the local phone alarm louder.

Design principle: Keep the calendar/task system as the source of truth; add a specialized alarm layer for events where an ordinary notification is not good enough.
